Research Associate

Researcher position: Organic Analytical Chemistry/ Environmental Chemistry

The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science at NMBU (Norwegian University of Life Sciences) is looking for Analytical chemists to quantify emerging chemicals in the aqueous environment. The position is a one-year Research scientist position (with the possibility of extension till two years). The selected researcher would participate in the GREW project (pollutant in recycled gray water resources), FEARLESS (novel poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in coastal environments as well as the recently established EU PARC (partnership for the assessment of risks from chemicals).

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Development and optimization of multi-component organic-analytical methods for quantitatively determining Chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) using chromatographic techniques and mass selective detection.
  • Candidate to be active in conducting field and laboratory experiments for fate and risk assessment.
  • The candidate shall contribute to ongoing environmental studies and co-supervise ongoing Ph.D. researchers.
  • Application of modern method evaluation strategies in organic trace analysis and comprehensive statistical methods for translating complex chemical and exposure data.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must hold a Ph.D. qualification in chemistry, specializing in organic analytical chemistry or similar.
  • Applicant must have a documented academic solid background from previous studies.
  • Applicant must be able to document proficiency in English (written and oral).
  • Applicant must have documented expertise and interest in the research subject.
  • Applicant must also demonstrate experience in quantitative trace analysis of organic pollutants in environmental samples.
  • Proficient in developing and conducting field and laboratory experiments for environmental assessment and trace-level determination of organic pollutants.
  • Sufficient knowledge/expertise on quality control and validation criteria for modern multi-component trace analytical technologies such as high-resolution chromatography (GC & HPLC) in combination with mass selective detection.
  • Knowledge of handling and interpretation of relevant software for qualitative and quantitative data handling, understanding of Chemometrics, and practical experience with GC/LC instrument maintenance and hardware adjustments.
  • Experience in experimental design for exposure and pollutant distribution assessments.
