The German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), Germany, is the largest German support organization in international academic cooperation. DAAD is a private, federally funded, state-funded, self-governing national higher education agency in Germany. This organization was founded on 1 January 1925 but closed in 1945, only to be refunded in 1950. It embodies 365 German higher education institutions (including one hundred universities and technical universities, 162 public universities of applied sciences, and other 52 music and art colleges). DAAD awards grants to German and international students, doctoral students, and scholars for studies and research abroad. DAAD offers an annual budget of nearly 400 million Euros and supports approximately 50,000 grantees per annum, approximately 11,000 of which are on long-term scholarships. DAAD is the most prominent academic grant organization worldwide.
