FMI International PhD Program, University of Basel

Friedrich Miescher Institute (FMI) International Ph.D. program offers students the opportunity to carry out biomedical research at the highest level in an encouraging, highly international, and collaborative atmosphere. The selected Ph.D. scholars work with internationally recognized scientists and have access to innovative technology platforms.
The FMI participates in an international and interdisciplinary graduate teaching program along with the Biozentrum (University of Basel), the Department of Biomedicine of the (University of Basel), the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (TPH).

Requirements:
For the Ph.D. Program:

  • Applicants must hold a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a Ph.D. or equivalent program in their home country (MSc., Diploma, DEA, etc.). 

For the MD-PhD Program:

  • Applicants must have studied medicine and hold a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter clinical training in their home country (Medical Diploma, Approbation, etc.). 
  • Candidates with documented research laboratory experience would have the advantage.

Duration: Four to Five years.
Application timelines:

  • There are two rounds of applications every year, with an application's last date in May and November. All applications are evaluated by group leaders who have openings within their teams. A group of shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in June and January.
  • The interviews take place 7 to 8 weeks after each deadline 

The application:

  • An application form needs to be applied online. 
  • The candidate should provide contact details of at least one referee familiar with their training and research experience. 
  • Multiple letters (up to three) are preferred. 
  • Once the candidate has applied, the referees will receive a link to upload their letter (not visible to the applicant).
