- The fellowship is open to domestic and international students.
- The fellowships are accessible to students beginning their first year of full-time Ph.D., DMA, or MDPhD studies but may be offered to continuing students. The fellowship may be funded for up to four years, but the funding duration may be less in some circumstances.
- Candidates holding Tri-Agency awards automatically become 4YF designates: Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), Vanier Scholarships, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships.
