Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) PhD fellowships

A Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) Ph.D. fellowship is offered to Europeans worldwide and non-Europeans pursuing their Ph.D. in Europe. The fellowship includes a competitive monthly stipend. Fellowship is initially granted for two years and can be extended once for 1.5 years. In addition, the selected candidate receives travel allowances, e.g., for scientific conferences, and participates in tailor-made seminars for BIF fellows and alumni.

Requirements:

  1. The projects that use plants as model systems aim to explain a general biological phenomenon and are supported via this fellowship. Theoretical or computational projects can be supported if they address a question in basic biomedical research (e.g., bioinformatics, the structure of biomolecules, neural networks). 
  2. The proposals related to applied research (e.g., biotechnological development, drug design, drug development, pharmacological tests, or improvements), clinical studies, or the development of therapeutic applications and methods are not supported via this fellowship.
  3. The candidate doesn't need to be enrolled in a specific Ph.D. program, but a supervisor and institution must accept the candidate to pursue the Ph.D. 

How to apply:
The application package must consist of the following:

  1. An application form on the online portal with a PDF copy containing documents
  2. Letter(s) of recommendation.
  3. Project proposal: Title and summary of Ph.D. project (max. 1,400 characters including spaces)
  4. Reasons for wishing to work with the proposed group
  5. Summary of final experimental thesis (e.g., bachelor, diploma, master thesis) preceding the Ph.D. project
  6. List of applicant's publications (if applicable)
  7. Scans of certificates of all academic qualifications (including grades) and certificates of professional education before university (if applicable); in chronological order
  8. Scans of high school diploma/secondary school leaving certificate including grades and university entrance test (e.g., SAT/ACT, PAU, YGS/LYS, Joint Entrance Examination, etc.). 

Deadlines: February 1, June 1, and October 1 of each year
